This cheery quilt is a fun way to use test samples with a common theme. Our wall hanging features handbags, shoes and hats. By choosing fabric prints that coordinate with the stitch-outs, the quilt will have an overall pleasing look.

     Supplies   Block construction

Note: Finished quilt is 36" square.

Note: Sew right sides together, with 1/4" seams.

  • Nine test samples that coordinate by theme and can be cut to 6 1/2" square.

  • Six to eight fat quarters of coordinating fabrics plus other scraps as desired.

  • 40" square of batting

  • 1/2 yard of fabric for binding

  • 1/2 yard of fabric for outside border

  • 1-1/4 yards of fabric for backing

  • Quilting and sewing thread

  • Temporary spray adhesive

  • Rotary cutter, mat and ruler

  • Pencil

  ●  Trim the test samples to 6-1/2" square. Carefully trim away any excess stabilizer.

●  Cut strips of fabric in the size desired to create an overall block size of 10 1/2". Note: In our sample, 1-1/2"-wide strips were cut and stitched together, with the exception of the center block.

●  Sew the side strips on the first block and trim at an angle for interest (A on page 3). Add the upper and lower edge block strips in the same manner. Sew and cut another set of strips similarlywide where the first one was narrow, and vice versa (B on page 3).

●  Sew strips to the remaining blocks as noted above.

●  Trim the finished blocks to 10-1/2" (C on page 3). Note: The center block is done slightly different than the others. In this block, a narrow (3/4" finished) black fabric strip was inserted between the purple strip and the final strip. This distinguishes the center block from the other blocks and gives the quilt a focal point.
