Sections A & B - Press Here to see diagram

  • Cut 2"-wide strips from the fat quarters. Using a 1/4" seam allowance, sew two different sets of six strips each (A).
  • Cut horizontally across the strips for nine pieced strips (B).
  • Sew these nine pieced strips together, alternating strips from each set. The pieced strips will be easier to sew together if you alternate the direction of the seam allowances. Pin strips together with the seam allowances facing opposite directions (C). Press seam allowances alternating direction of seam allowances. Follow the Quilt Diagram on page 58 to create the "A" background area. Create an area that is six squares wide and nine squares tall. Set aside section "A."
  • To create the pieced strips for the "B" background, follow the process for creating section "A," making it 12 squares high and 6 squares wide. Cut horizontally across these strips until you have 12 pieced strips.
  • Sew the 12 pieced strips together as directed above, alternating strips from each set. Set aside section "B."

Maple leaf blocks

  • Section "C" is comprised of two maple leaf blocks, set horizontally. Section "D" is comprised of four maple leaf blocks, set vertically. Follow the Block Diagram to make the 4 1/2" blocks (D). Sew three strips (E), and then sew the strips together to make the leaf.

  TIP:
When making the half-square triangle units, start with bias cut strips so that the unit outside edges are on the straight and cross grains

Section A

  • Cut two pieces of mesh stabilizer. Spray temporary adhesive to one layer and adhere them together.
  • Baste a strip of muslin to the lower edge of the section and to each side, to aid in hooping.

  • Hoop and embroider a leaf border along the lower edge row. Un-hoop and trim away the excess stabilizer. If desired, add other autumn leaf embroideries to this section. In the sample, an oak leaf and branch were added.
  • Remove the basted muslin strips.

Section B

  • Baste muslin strips along the left side and upper and lower edges of section B as you did for section A.
  • Adhere two rectangles of mesh stabilizer larger than your hoop together with temporary spray adhesive.
  • Begin on the left side and embroider the desired designs. For the corners, use spray adhesive to adhere two pieces of stabilizer to each other and then more to adhere them to the fabric. Embroider the desired designs; trim away the excess stabilizer.

  • Cut two rectangles of stabilizer and prepare as above. Measure 3/4" from the left side and center and embroider two leaf designs of your choice. Note: See the leaves and acorn designs on the sample. Un-hoop and remove the excess stabilizer.
  • To appliqué the tree trunks: (See below)

Enlarge the tree trunk patterns onto pattern
tracing paper (F on enlarged Pattern). Cut a piece of freezer paper larger than the pattern and use a glue stick to coat the dull side; adhere the traced patterns. Cut out the patterns from the freezer paper and set aside.

Remove the paper backing from one side of two 9"x12" sheets of double-sided fusible web. Iron it to the back of dark brown or gray/brown fat quarters. Iron the tree patterns (shiny side down) onto the fabric. Cut the trees out of the fabric. Remove the second paper backing from the fusible web. Position the trees onto the background following the Quilt Diagram and iron into place. Using a thread color that matches the tree fabric, zigzag or satin stitch the trees onto the background using your sewing machine.
