Pink Roses for a "Reel" Lady |

An Original Creation by Susan Deal, |

In the realm
of fantasy, one ultimate fantasy is that of the "princess at the
ball." One of Susan's favorite movie stars was Audrey Hepburn. Even
though she actually played a princess in Roman Holiday, Susan chose to
"re-imagine" a dress she wore in Sabrina. The original was in white
silk with black floral embroidery. This time around, Susan felt that
Audrey should be "pretty in pink."
The original design pink silk overskirt is embroidered in many
different floral designs - mostly roses. Software was used to resize and manipulate the various motifs. The
embroidery was done in a combination of speciality threads. Dusty
pinks, a varied palette of greens, and dashes of yellow and bright
pink helped create the overall look. Some of the floral motifs are
connected with machine decorative stitching as well as free-motion
work. Crystal
beads were hand-sewn to highlight the various motifs. With five yards
of fabric, five yards of lining, and eight yards of netting to give
the skirt pouf - sometimes it felt like wrestling a puffy gorilla. |

The companion
silk stole is embellished with stitchery. Over 100 embroidered motifs cover the
overskirt, stole, and dress.
While she was working on this garment, Susan's mother passed away.
While going through some of her things, Susan found these rhinestone
and pearl drop earrings and the sparkly button for the overskirt- both
of which she knew would be absolutely perfect for this ensemble. It
seemed kind of a last gift from her mother during this time period.
Sometimes, a fairytale princess has to come back to reality.
When she removes her overskirt, tiara, and gloves and puts on her
velvet shrug, she is a more modern day princess-in-waiting ready for an evening out.
The fitted calflength strapless dress is enhanced with some of the
same floral embroideries on the bodice and around the hem, and
has more of the crystal beads. An interesting technique was to
hand-pick the zipper using pink seed beads. The luxurious silk and
rayon embossed velvet |

shrug has also been enhanced with many hand
sewn crystals.
With this ensemble, a woman could be either a "princess at the
ball" or a "princess at heart" and look elegant either way. |
